Backstory #1: Betrayal

Maverick Solen Santillanes, more commonly known as Mavi, was born into a family who can pay the media, the government, even international, to open doors for the helpless. To the public, the Santillanes family was polished, powerful, and untouchable with a future set in stone for them, owning one of the most influential shipping lines in the Philippines, the Philippine Grand Pacific Lines. Their company rule over the whole country, carrying passengers, cargos, and reputation port to port, therefore solidifying his stature. But to the people who knew him, Mavi was not just a Santillanes heir. He is also Sol, the loving son, the older brother, the son who carries too much pain and memories, and a man who never learned how to separate love from damage.Mavi grew up with his younger brother, Malachi Seren Santillanes, who is a year younger behind him in age. Malachi, or Mal/Seren by some, was one of the few people who sees Maverick behind his sharp, intimidating demeanor. While the rest of the world sees the two of them as the future owners of the company, their mother sees them as two little kids who wanted freedom and decisions for themselves, each dedicated to their crafts. The siblings bond with late night music, bringing a comfortable solace that only the two of them could understand.Being born with golden spoon fed to him, Mavi is expected to enjoy life with no hardships. Career, houses, money, all is set for him. However, Mavi was sheltered, raised with private schools, strict household, formal gatherings, and thousands of media plays. He learned early how to build a wall, how to keep his public persona, how to keep himself guarded even if everything was falling apart. His parents' divorce became the first streak for him. His father's cheating had gone under the rug, and the story of his mother becoming mentally unstable earned a million of views and hate from the media. Mavi knew the truth, deep inside. His mother, now residing in a facility away from them, had gone insane because of his father's multiple relationships. After all, love indeed makes people go insane. Mavi could not accept that his mother was sent away from him, the love for his father dissipating like water vapor, while the hatred grew inside.That betrayal shaped Maverick Solen more than he would ever admit. Gone is the loving teenager son and replaced by a suspicious grown man. He is uncertain with affection, and uncomfortable with vulnerability, almost impossible to reach romantically. He said he can do it, he could entertain, but when a relationship starts to feel a little too close for him, he pulls back and closes his doors like media is out soon to get him. He has convinced himself that, staying unattached was safer than becoming either of his parents.

Backstory #2: Path

Instead of following the path carved for him, Mavi chose cooking. The comfort of cooking reminds him of his mother's affection for them siblings, especially her signature dish, Kare-Kare. Despite his good reputation, he still could not perfect this recipe and would often mess it up due to the emotional instability. Still, he tried hard to get into one of the best culinary programs in the Philippines. He graduated from Enderun Colleges with a degree in BS International Hospitality Management, specializing in Culinary Arts, a decision that is a face of rebellion for his father, and memories for his mother. He rules the kitchen like a king, crowning his head with a hat, instead of bossing around the office with a hundred-dollar worth tuxedo. He currently resides in Makati, close to the PGPL's main office, but alone to pretend that he has some control with his life. While his parents and relatives continue to pressure him and Malachi to take over the company, Mavi insists on staying across the cruises, sailing along with his dreams as one of the head chef aboard one of their passenger ferries.

Backstory #3: Work

Maverick's work takes him across the sea for twenty-four to forty-eight hours a week, mainly along the Manila route to Iloilo, Aklan, and Palawan. Onboard, the waves of the sea and rising sun makes him forget who he is, and stays hopeful. He is not the reckless, no future son that people talk about. He has a path, a flower road that everyone was talking about, where he guides himself because no one else will. At work, he is scary, intimidating, and terrifyingly particular in the kitchen as a chef would be. He has an aura that can make the staffs' skin hair stand, their backs as straight as a pole. He is often hotheaded at work, and can shout when necessary, but he is the scariest and deadly when silent. His attitude can show, be painfully blunt when someone is careless with a craft that he is passionate about. Beneath his temper, he is caring for the staffs, can see who has eaten, who looks tired, and who needs help, and he acts on his own way.
